Why You Should Use RV Tire Chains
Snow chains, also known as tire chains, are fitted to the exterior of the tires to provide additional grip for the vehicle in snowy or icy conditions. Without the additional grip provided by the snow chains, the wheels would simply spin, and you would lose your ability to control the vehicle.
Because RV's are heavier than standard cars, they can have trouble gaining traction on slippery surfaces. The horizontal links on the RV tire chains help to grip the surface and provide traction.
When to Use RV Tire Chains
When conditions are icy, it is important to use chains on your RV tires for better traction. However, once the road conditions improve, you should remove the chains as soon as possible to avoid damaging your tires and the road. RV tire chains are designed to bite into softer, snowy, or icy surfaces. It's also important to remove the chains as soon as it's safe to do so, as they can have a negative impact on fuel efficiency and top speed.
If you're travelling in an area where signs tell you to carry snow chains, make sure you have them with you. Failing to do so could lead to fines or worse. Some areas within a country may require that drivers have snow chains during certain times of the year. Always check with the relevant local authorities to determine if this is the case in your destination country.
How to Use RV Tire Chains
RV tire chains can be difficult to fit without the right know-how. Although they are designed to be attached to the exterior of the tires without having to remove the wheels, there is a proper procedure that will make the process more manageable.
Start by laying out the chains on the ground, making sure that everything about the chain is straight and not twisted or kinked. Lift the chain to make sure it is centred on the tire. Make sure you know which wheels are the “drive wheels.” These are the only wheels that should have chains. To attach the chains, drive slowly over them about three feet. Make sure to link the loose ends of the chain together first. After linking the chain, make sure it is attached over the tire as tightly as possible, and make sure to attach the portion of the chain that is on the inside of your wheel first. Some RV tire chains come with tighteners that can be used further to increase the chain’s tension around the tire.

It is always best to read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. These instructions are the most accurate and specific for the chains and your vehicle.
Try installing the chains over your tires before the trip. It is much easier to experience the learning curve in your own driveway than on a mountain road in an icy blizzard. That is also a good time to find out that you have purchased chains that are the right size for your tires. Make sure that the specifications listed match your tire dimensions.
