Whether you are a nature lover, enjoy a good bird song in the morning, or are an avid bird watcher, California provides an incredible backdrop for you to go bird watching. You can experience avian magic all across the state.
Birds can be found on all seven continents and, while you are driving the roads in your Expedition Motorhomes California RV rentals, it is quite easy to add a few bird-oriented stops to your trip. Even if you are not ticking off a life list of birds, each of the following coastal destinations is a worthy stop in its own right. Experiencing the breadth and diversity of birdlife in these regions is just an added bonus.
South Humboldt Bay State Marine Recreation Management Area (SMRMA)
South Humboldt Bay State Marine Recreation Management Area, outside of Loleta, CA north of San Francisco, is a birders' and sea lovers' paradise. Breathtaking views, more than 250 different bird species, colorful intertidal life, kayaking opportunities, and two spits that separate Humboldt Bay from the Pacific Ocean make this slice of coastal California a quintessential Northern California bird-watching destination. If you plan to head this far north, you can’t miss opportunities to explore the redwood forests, national parks, and San Francisco along the way!
Stunning Coastal Beauty just outside of San Francisco
Another Northern California birding destination worth a visit no matter your relationship with our feathered friends is Point Reyes National Seashore. Point Reyes offers visitors over 1500 species of plants and animals to discover. Sheer cliffs, breathtaking beaches, and the regular electric sunset draw thousands of visitors each year. Despite being so close to San Francisco, Point Reyes still feels wild, and the 470 species of birds that have passed through this place can attest to that. In addition to bird watching, visitors can fish, kayak, camp, hike, and explore to their hearts content!
Bolsa Bay & Bolsa Chica Basin
If you’re not quite ready to dive into adventure birding and would prefer to give bird watching a try a little closer to Expedition Motorhomes headquarters, look no further than Bolsa Chica Basin State Marine Conservation Area. This protected area is just outside of Huntington Beach and is the perfect Southern California birding getaway. More than 300 different bird species call this place home, and it is an essential stop for many on their migratory path to their typical homes in South America or further to the north. This is a great place to visit, even if you have just a half a day to kill in Los Angeles before returning your motorhome rental.
Bird watching is a quick and easy activity to include on any vacation, and learning about and appreciating local birdlife and ecology can add a lot to an already unforgettable trip.
If you are not a birder already, pick up a guidebook and pair of binoculars and consider giving it a shot this summer. Visit Audubon for even more suggested California birding destinations.
